On a Monday night going to a private members only club in Hollywood for a video release party is so LA! The h Club, founded in London by musicians is “A home for the creative industries.” It’s a six floor building of posh creative space with conveniences at every corner. I was privy to be at the ulterior club for Sam Sparro’s “Everything” Video Release Party. As I sat in the artists lounge grooving to Prince’s “Hot Thing” I knew it was going to be a good night.
Sam Sparro is a grammy nominated singer, songwriter and producer. His new full length album titled “Boombox Eternal” is his first album since 2012. The vibe of his new album is a breath of fresh air in the times we live in today.

Drawing influence from the 80’s and 90’s, openly gay Sparro says, “What if I would have seen 5 gay guys doing a video in the 80’s, how would that have influenced me?” Funny Sam says that in reference to the videos of the new wave and pop era’s, because that’s exactly what kids were seeing when they watched videos from “Flock of Seagulls” and “Depeche Mode,” and so many more.
Sparro’s party had an intimate feeling. People got there on time, got their cocktails at the seven chandelier bar, and got good seats by the video monitors. The video screening was followed by a hosted Q & A with the artist Sparro and filmmaker director Deanne Reynolds, followed by a DJ set from both.
On this video Sam collaborated with director and filmmaker Deanne Reynolds. Reynolds also known as “Dede” has had her own success as a solo artist and vocalist. Reynolds has been featured on KCRW, Flaunt Magazine, Mixmag and BBC Radio. Deanne is currently working on her first short horror film. Sparro and Reynolds have worked together before directing each other’s art, videos and music.
“This album is a love letter to my younger self” Sparro notes. “Everything” is about how loving someone can be everything. The beginning of the video starts with a short skit of Sparro’s friends coming to get him for a day date, ala Janet Jackson video, circa sometime in the 90’s. Filmed out in the desert of California, the cast jumps out of the video in bright color suits remnant of the 80’s. The video delivers its promise of feel good happy vibes making you laugh and doesn’t take itself too seriously.
“I fell in love with music again, I fell in love with myself again, and I fell in love with my husband!” said Sparro when I asked him what had moved him to make music again after so many years. ‘This album is a body of work, not just a collection of songs.”
“Boombox Eternal” pays homage to everything we really miss, music you can feel good and dance to that also says something to you. The sound and electronic synthesizers are inspired by the Minneapolis style production of artists such as Prince and George Michael, and well appreciated producers Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis.
The brilliant video promo art is styled after a VHS, and the album is being released on vinyl and cassette! How cool is that? The album features grammy nominated artists We Are King, Maluca, Rahsaan Patterson, Nikka Costa, Ryland Blackinton, and Vaughn Oliver.
Sparro is an artist in every aspect, born in Sydney Australia, and raised in Los Angeles, Sparro is the recipient of GQ Magazines “Style Award” and the GLAAD Media Award for Outstanding artist. Sparrow having performed around the world is also a talented photographer. Sam Sparro’s new full length EP “Boombox Eternal” is due to be released in February 2020.
