RECAP: LAS CAFETERAS AT LOS GLOBOS

DSC_2717

Silver Lake got a taste of East LA last Wednesday night at Los Globos with an incredible performance by alt-Latin rockers Las Cafteras. Influenced by the traditional Son Jarocho sound, the seven-piece band kicked off their “Road to SXSW” Tour by delivering inspiring lyrics of justice in the City of Angels. The crowd could not stop moving to the infectious beat of the drums and string instruments. Things got especially raucous when strong politically-guided lyrics sent a surge of energy through the room, and people showed their support with hand-raised shouts.

D.I.Y.: LIPBALM

final

You ever put on a jacket and find a tube of lipstick from the last time you wore it, but keep leaving it in there because it’s almost gone or broken or melted? Well if you’re having problems letting go of that half tube of your favorite coral (or just have some colors that were too intense), here’s a way to convert it into a balm and use it to the last smear.

materials

MATERIALS:
-lipstick(s)
-petroleum jelly
-new container(s)
-chopstick/little spoon/something to mix with
OPTIONAL:
-essential oils (for scented balm!)
-vitamin E (to moisturize!)
-cosmetic grade glitter (to get crazy!)

STEPS:

step1

1. Using clean containers (mine used to have soap in them, so I rinsed and dried before I started), break off/scoop and drop your lipstick and enough petroleum jelly to fill the rest of the container.

step2

2. Using a chopstick/stirring utensil of choice, blend the lipstick and jelly until the color and texture is consistent. Add any fun extras you want at this point too. Try mixing colors if you’re feeling adventurous.

TIP: This can get messy real quick. Keep some paper towels close by to keep the mess under control.

3. That’s it! Enjoy.

SWEET THINGS: BABYCAKES AT ARTISAN HOUSE

babycakes

Here at LA Canvas we love all that is sweet and savory. So of course we’ve had our share of Babycakes, the ridiculously yummy organic/gluten-dairy-egg-free baked goods originated in NYC. Unfortunately, Babycakes’ tiny Downtown LA shop is no longer with us, and while we were about to enter the stages of mourning, hope arose. Our friends at Artisan House have taken on the little pastries, like the doughnuts shown above, and now sell the goods in-store. We highly suggest getting down there if you need your fix, and if you have not yet tried the Babycakes goodness, AH has saved the day!
